Abstract

In Salvador, as well as in other Brazilian cities, housing reflects the inequalities in its urban space. From the production of social housing in the peripheries by Banco Nacional de Habitação (BNH) and Programa Minha Casa, Minha Vida (PMCMV) to the construction of luxury gated communities, the city has been characterized by social and spacial disparities. In this paper, we discuss both State and private involvement in the production of housing and urban space. Analyzing two different projects in the city of Salvador: Bosque das Bromélias and Hemisphere 360º, we highlight some urban issues regarding both cases, such as their integration in the urban fabric and and compliance with urban policy. Finally, we demonstrate the importance of the State Public Ministry of Bahia’s (MPBA) work to defend collective interests and rights towards the construction of a less uneven city.
